Springtail of the Month - 3

Species: Tetracanthella brachyura [Bagnall 1949]
Family: Isotomidae
Collection site: Collected from moss on N edge of Malham Tarn Moss.
A dark species, longest specimen 1.2mm. Needed lactic acid treatment to check many characters used in identification. In both Fjellberg and Gisin, keys out to T.britannica (Cassagnau) which is now accepted as a junior synonym of T.brachyura.
To identify as family Isotomidae: Body elongate, thorax and abdomen segments clearly separated (at most the 2-3 posterior segments fused) (e.g. Folsomia). Th1 without setae dorsally and often covered by Th2. Body without scales, seldom weakly bristled, but never with clubbed setae. Abd3 and Abd4 not markedly different in length. Furca often reduced.
